Alumni Spotlight: Agathon Hutama Nurturing Universitas Sanata Dharma's Theater Club – Alumni Gives Back

Agathon Hutama, an English Letters alumnus

Among English Letters alumni, one name shines brightly for his dedication to nurturing young talents within the university's theater club, Teater Seribu Djendela (TSD). Meet Agathon Hutama, an esteemed alumnus whose passion for the arts has led him to invest his time and energy in developing the future of theater at his alma mater.

Agathon's journey with TSD began during his student days at Universitas Sanata Dharma, where he practised his acting skills and found a sense of belonging within the theater club. After graduating from the English Letters department, Agathon's college academic and non-academic life laid the foundation for his lifelong love of the performing arts.

Today, Agathon remains deeply committed to giving back to the institution that played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic journey. "I am committed to serving as the advisor of Teater Seribu Djendela because I believe in the importance of staying connected with the youth and supporting their artistic ideas to grow," Agathon shares. "I need to keep updated and bridge the generational gap so I can still understand what is going on nowadays." Agathon's dedication to working with young people derives from his belief in the value of fresh ideas and innovative thinking. "Young people bring fresh ideas and perspectives that are incredibly resourceful in helping them survive life's challenges," he explains. "I find working with them both inspiring and rewarding. Acting has high humanistic values in practice."

As an advisor to TSD, Agathon brings relevant knowledge and experience to the table, drawing from his own experiences as a member of the theater club. His perspective as both an actor and a manager enables him to provide valuable insights and guidance to aspiring performers, helping them navigate the intricacies of the theatrical world with confidence and skill.

“As a mentor, Agathon is very considerate when giving advice. His presence helps TSD always to learn and grow. Keeping up with the spirit of the age, some of his advice may be ‘classic’ and different from us, the younger generation. He is reflecting a person coming from the letters department. His ideas and writings inspire me. He provides suggestions or practical examples with clear targets and objectives so that our acting division can map how to handle challenges during training. As far as I know, he also writes scripts used for our performances and revises scripts for actors and actresses before they perform,” said I Gusti Ayu Aprilia Dewi from TSD’s acting division, an English Letters’ student from batch 2021.

Beyond his advisory role, Agathon remains actively involved in supporting TSD's activities, whether it's through rehearsals or performances. His unwavering dedication to the club serves as a source of inspiration for students, encouraging them to pursue their passion for theater with courage and determination. Agathon Hutama stands as a real example of mentorship and support, guiding students along their artistic journey and ensuring that the spirit of theater burns brightly within the university's halls.
