English Department Universitas Sanata Dharma in cooperation with Rumah Budaya Kratonan Surakarta held English Basic Conversation Training as one of the society services programs. This training held from March 18 to May 20, 2023. RBK is a cultural and educational space in Solo, this place also provides space for many voluntary programs. USD and RBK worked together to organize a program “Daily English Together with Kids”. The program was open and free for the public. This training was designed for kids from ages 5 to 12 years old. There were five meetings every Saturday starting from 10 a.m to 12 a.m. The volunteer was from English Department students. They are Yoga, Ibnu, Yusuf, Rezki, Fofo, Anya, and Sekar.
The training topics were Introducing Self, Body Part, Family, Classroom Object, and Adventure Games. There were around 25 kids from Solo joined and had fun together. The activity started with dancing and singing English nursery songs. Then, it will be followed by learning new vocabulary and expressions related to the topic. The next activity was doing the worksheet individually or in groups. The students were encouraged to practice the conversation in front of the class to improve their confidence. The teacher used pictures and videos for the interactive learning to make the training more fun. In every meeting, the students got points that would be accumulated in the last meeting. The goal of the society services program is to give Sanata Dharma students the experience of becoming educators and to improve the conversation skills of the kids at RBK. The project is expected to assist the students to perform better English in their daily conversation and encourage them to speak English confidently in public.
